SULAIMANI — Residents of Sulaimani’s Awin City development on Saturday (September 19) protested about the foul odor emanating from a nearby animal market and abattoir, saying that they have complained about the problem for years to no avail and suggested that the political connections of the market’s owner have prevented its resolution.

“Especially when wind blows the odor toward our homes, we feel like we’re about to suffocate,” one of the protesters told NRT Digital Media.

Another resident said that there were plenty of other markets and slaughterhouses in the city and questioned why it is important for this one to continue operating so close to people's homes.

According to the protesters, the owner of the market is politically-connected with multiple investments in the area, including a joint venture that laid the local internet cables.
