SULAIMANI — Spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Housing and Construction Mariwan Mala Hassan promised on Thursday (September 17) that the Kurdistan Region will be connected by a network of railroads in the future, even floating that the project may start as early as the end of the year.

During NRT’s Panorama program, Mala Hassan said that plans were already underway.

“If the situation of the Region and Iraq improves, our ministry will invite foreign companies to implement the project [starting] by the end of this year,” he said, adding that a rail alternative will reduce traffic on the Region’s streets.

Officials in the current KRG cabinet have raised the idea of a rail network several times in the past. It was also a part of the New Generation Movement’s policy platform ahead of the 2018 federal and Regional elections.
