SULAIMANI — Zahko district in northwestern Duhok governorate officially became the Kurdistan Region’s fourth independent administration on Monday (September 20).

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said during a ceremony that the move will better facilitate administrative work for local residents.

"Throughout our homeland’s history and struggle, Zakho has contributed to our collective security and economy,” Barzani said in a tweet.

"Now, by empowering Zakho to grow further and faster, we will see it able to build a better future for all of Kurdistan,” he added.

Zakho became a district in 1864. It consists of Darkar, Batifa, and Rizgari sub-districts and includes nearly 187 villages.

It is home to the economically important Ibrahim Khalil border crossing with Turkey.

In addition to Zakho, Erbil governorate's Soran and Sulaimani governorate’s Raparin and Garmian are also independent administrations.
