The significant drop in the Mosul Dam’s water level has revealed homes and buildings in villages surrounding Zumar, uncovering structures submerged since the 1980s.
Residents in the area reported spotting the ruins of former village schools and homes that were flooded decades ago during the construction of the Mosul Dam. The structures, including stone walls and foundations, have reemerged as the dam’s reservoir shrinks.
According to the Zumar Water Directorate, the declining water level has led to the suspension of several critical water projects.
"If the situation continues, Iraq will face a water shortage more severe than previously imagined,” a local official stated.
Iraq continues to face mounting challenges from climate change, upstream water controls, and infrastructure strain — all contributing to the country’s worsening water crisis.
