Jumana Ghalai, spokeswoman for the Iraqi Independent High Election Commission (IHEC), stated on Wednesday that any individual found buying voter cards from citizens will face up to one year in prison.
She emphasized that voter cards are non-transferable and can only be used by the registered voter. Biometric safeguards, including fingerprint scans from all ten fingers, prevent the misuse of these cards.
"There is no benefit in purchasing voter cards,” Ghalai said, adding that voters are able to file complaints against anyone attempting to buy or misuse their cards.
The statement comes as Iraq prepares for its upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November.
