SULAIMANI — Unidentified gunmen killed four members of the
Iraqi army in the northwest of Kirkuk province on Friday night (November 18).
Security sources and a local official informed the
Associated Press (AP) that Islamic State (ISIS) militants killed four soldiers
in Dibis district in northwest Kirkuk.
NRT has learned the gunmen attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint
located less than one kilometer from a base manned by Peshmerga forces.
The victims were members of the 31st Brigade of the 8th
Division in the Iraqi army.
A security source informed NRT the gunmen’s attack came
suddenly without allowing the Iraqi army a chance to fight back.
A security delegation arrived at the 8th Division sector in
Kirkuk on Saturday to determine the cause of the incident at the checkpoint and
open an investigation into those responsible, Iraqi News Agency said.
The Governor of Kirkuk, Rakan al-Jabouri, told AP he blamed
the "negligence” of security forces and the security gap between Peshmerga and
Iraqi forces for the incident.
