SULAIMANI— A Kurdistan
Region Peshmerga delegation and Iraqi Defence Ministry officials discussed
joint security operations at a meeting in Baghdad on Thursday (June 23), the
Ministry of Peshmerga announced.
The visiting Kurdistan
Region delegation was led by Peshmerga Chief of Staff Lt-General Essa Awez, who
met the Deputy Commander of the Joint Operations, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir
Al-Shammari, according to a Peshmerga ministry spokesperson.
Star Abdulkarim said
the meeting would cover topics including the relations between the Peshmerga
and the Iraqi forces and joint operations and brigades between the two forces.
The Iraqi Joint
Operations Command issued a statement saying the goal of the visit is to expand
security coordination and intelligence sharing between the joint operations
command and Iraqi border guards in areas of mutual interest to clear them from
militias.
Iraqi Defence Ministry
and Peshmerga Ministry have signed "joint coordination" agreement
which covers setting up coordination centres, closing security vacuums in the
disputed territories between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga, deploying joint
checkpoints, launching operations against the Islamic State (ISIS), and
exchanging security and intelligence information.
