SULAIMANI — Anti-terror police and intelligence agents in Istanbul have arrested a man they believe to be the leader of the Islamic State (ISIS), senior Turkish officials said on Thursday (May 26), according to Bloomberg News.

Bloomberg said Turkey’s OdaTV news said the man was ISIS leader Abu al-Hassan al-Qurayshi, who was named the new ISIS caliph after the previous leader, was killed in a US raid in Syria in February.

Turkish officials said President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been made aware of the suspect’s arrest, according to Bloomberg, who said it could not verify the man’s identity.

Officials said the suspect was detained after a long process of police surveillance of a residence where he had been staying, OdaTV noted.
