SULAIMANI — The head of the civil defense center in Darbandikhan, Kaiwan
Ahmed, told NRT their teams managed to rescue a shepherd from drowning in the
Sirwan River along with 70 of his sheep in the village of Zhazhla.
Ahmed said the shepherd had taken his flock to the river while the Darbandikhan
dam was closed, but the dam was reopened shortly afterwards, inundating the
riverbed.
He said civil defense teams were promptly notified and closed the dam while
their diving teams managed to rescue the man and his flock of sheep in about an
hour.
Ahmed said Darbandikhan dam is opened periodically at the request of Diyala
officials for farming purposes.
