SULAIMANI — At least six people were wounded in a knife attack on a
passenger train in the city of Aachen in western Germany on Friday (May 13),
NRT reporter Halgurd Omer said.
The suspect, a 31-year-old man of unknown citizenship who was born in Iraq,
has been arrested, according to the reporter.
The suspect had been flagged as a person at risk for religious
radicalization in 2017 when he was living in a refugee center, according to
Deutsche Welle (DW), which added authorities are examining a possible extremist
motive.
The Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, said investigators
believe the suspect intended to harm as many people as possible.
The perpetrator was overpowered by an off-duty police officer with the aid
of two other passengers, DW said.
Four of those injured in the attack were taken to the hospital for wounds to
their faces and hands, none of which were life-threatening. The assailant was
also injured in the attack.
