SULAIMANI — New Generation Movement (NGM) President Shaswar
Abdulwahid said on Saturday (January 29) the movement is ready to vote for any
party’s candidate for the position of Iraq’s president if that party accepts
the NGM’s conditions, which it says are the demands of the people.
Abdulwahid said during a press conference it would be
against the movement’s principles to withdraw its candidate and vote for
another party’s nominee without achieving anything for the people of the
Kurdistan Region.
"Our first condition is for the Kurdistan Regional
Government (KRG) to decrease the price of gasoline, cooking gas, and kerosene
oil in the Region,” he said. "This should be done before Iraq’s parliament
meeting on voting for the candidates.”
Abdulwahid also stated the NGM asks the KRG to remove extra
taxes and fees on shopkeepers in the Region and to hold the Kurdistan
parliamentary election on time with no delay, supervised by an unaffiliated
commission.
The NGM’s other conditions were for the KRG to open bank
accounts for the employees and the retirees to add their monthly salaries to
their accounts every 30 days.
Providing job opportunities to the people of the Region was
an additional condition of the movement, Abdulwahid said.
The NGM president also said if either of the Region’s two
leading parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) or the Patriotic Union of
Kurdistan (PUK) were ready to accept their condition, the NGM would support
that party’s candidate.
On Thursday, Iraq’s parliamentary presidency said the
country’s president will be elected on February 7.
The presidency also said the list of candidates for the
position will be announced on January 31.
