SULAIMANI — Outgoing Iraqi Prime
Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi chaired an emergency meeting of the Ministerial Council
for National Security on Monday (January 17) following the bombings on Sunday evening
that struck in central Baghdad.
The council announced in a statement
that strict measures will be put in place "to end such acts of sabotage that
threaten public security in the country.”
The statement warned security heads
whose sectors were subjected to breaches will be reviewed and those who were
proven negligent will be held accountable.
The council issued security guidelines
for Baghdad to be followed later on in the rest of the country:
1. Motorcycles
are restricted to one rider at a time and are restricted from the streets
between the hours of 6pm to 6am. This is a reiteration of a previous guideline.
2. Government
vehicles are restricted from travel after working hours without a permission
slip.
3. Financial
rewards will be set for any citizen who reports suspicious activity.
4. Shop
owners must place security cameras in their workplaces.
Simultaneous
explosions targeting two Kurdish-owned banks in Baghdad’s Karrada district
struck on Sunday evening, injuring two people.
Sound
bombs exploded at Cihan bank near the National Theater and Kurdistan Bank near
al-Wathiq Square, Security Media Cell announced in a statement, also noting two
civilians sustained minor injuries.
The
United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) issued a statement on Sunday
night condemning the bombings and calling on authorities "to hold the
perpetrators accountable.”
