Ministry says they are working to return thousands of IDPs home

SULAIMANI — The Ministry of Migration and Displacement said on Monday (December 6) the ministry is trying in every manner to return the country’s thousands of displaced people to their homes.

Ali Abbas, the ministry’s spokesperson, told Sabah News to support their efforts the ministry is in continues contact with the World Food Program (WFP) in Iraq.

Abbas said the WFP has distributed tents to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and works to distribute food to displaced families.

The Duhok branch of the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, said there are 26,000 displaced people in 16 camps in Duhok governorate, with the majority from Sinjar and Nineweh governorate.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Cooperation Centre (JCC) said in September there are currently 926,018 refugees and IDPs registered in the Kurdistan Region.

The majority of IDPs live with the host communities in the Region, while only 30 percent live in the 36 camps in the Region.
