SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Interior Rebar Ahmed said on Tuesday (November 30) recent events that took place in Sulaimani and Ranya need "a serious investigation”, referring to the killing of a commander from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and student protests

PUK commander Murad Kani Kurdai and two of his security guards were killed on November 25 after allegedly confronting an "official force” attempting to arrest Kurdai.

Ahmed said during a press conference the KRG is against any kind of violence and everyone has the right to protest.

"Demonstration has its own legal procedures and it should be permitted,” he said.

He added there have always been outside agitators in the demonstrations and efforts had been made to mislead protesters into setting fire to government offices.

Students from universities and institutes in the Kurdistan Region protested for several days last week, demanding the payment of students’ monthly stipends.

Security forces in Sulaimani used batons and fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Dozens of protesters in Sulaimani and Erbil are currently held under arrest.
