SULAIMANI — Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Rashid al-Hamdani said on Tuesday (November 23) the water flow from Iran into Iraq has stopped completely.

Hamdani said in a televised interview both Turkey and Iran have violated international conventions on water.

The minister stated Turkey has provided Iraq with information on its reservoirs and dams but Iran has not given a justification for shutting off the water flow.

The ministry’s plan to handle drought and flooding requires a budget of $50-70 billion until 2035, Hamdani said, adding the budget was currently not sufficient to implement the plan.

Iraq is extremely vulnerable to drought and water insecurity, in large part because of extensive damming programs by Turkey and Iran along with climate change.
