SULAIMANI — Police broke up a demonstration in Soran by recent high school graduates on Wednesday (October 27), arresting most of those who gathered to protest the outcome of their university placements.

NRT reporter Karim Kaifi said that the students tried to hold a press conference with four media outlets present to cover it. When police began to arrest the students, they also seized Kaifi’s phone and reporting equipment that he had been using to document the press conference.

The equipment was returned at the police station after nearly an hour’s wait, with Kaifi warned "not do that again.”

Earlier on Wednesday, students across the Kurdistan Regionprotested against the results produced by the Zankoline system, which is used to place applicants in degree programs at public universities and institutes in the Region.
