SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Mayor Awat Muhammad said that an historical site was discovered in one of the oldest parts of the city on Wednesday (April 14).

Muhammad said that a property owner illegally tore down a building in the Julakan neighborhood, inadvertently uncovering the site, which contained human remains, small structures, and pottery.

An archaeologist working with the city said that initial indications suggest that the site is pre-Islamic, dating to the end of the Sassanid Empire.

The property owner will be taken to court over the illegal demolition.
