SULAIMANI — At least three protesters were killed and several others wounded as residents from towns and cities across Sulaimani governorate took to the streets on Monday (December 7) to protest deteriorating economic conditions, the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) failure to pay public sector salaries in full or on time, and the lack of public services.

Spokesperson for Chamchamal Health Directorate Sharif Rahim told NRT that a protester was killed and three other people were wounded during protest in the district.

Another protester was shot and killed in Kifri near the local office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), while a third was killed in Darbandikhan.

Additionally, an official at Kalar Hospital told NRT that the security forces in the city shot and wounded a 13-year-old in the neck as demonstrators stormed the local office of the Change Movement (Gorran).

In Said Sadiq, a town located southeast of Sulaimani city, protesters set fire to the local offices of several political parties, including those belonging to the PUK, Gorran, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the Kurdistan Islamic Group (KIG), and the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU). Several government buildings including the mayor's residence and the police and electricity directorate were also burned.

Party offices in Kifri, Kalar, Piramagrun, and Darbandikhan were also set on fire.

In Chamchamal and Takiya, protesters blocked Kirkuk-Sulaimani highway, while additional demonstrations took place in Sulaimani city, Halabja, and Ranya's Chwarqurna sub-district.

Kamal Muhammad, the head of Communication Department at Shahid Rauf Bag Hospital in Halabja Taza district, told NRT that seventeen people were admitted to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Fourteen of those patients had been hit with birdshot, he added.

Inmates at Erbil Adult Reform Prison also staged a demonstration, reportedly starting a fire at the facility. Large numbers of the security forces were deployed to the facility in response.

The latest round of mass protests began on Wednesday when thousands of civil servants, teachers, and local residents gathered in Sulaimani's main bazaar. A second day of protests in the city on Thursday was broken up by the local security forces, which left at least 25 people wounded.

On Sunday, protesters in Piramagrun sub-district, northwest of Sulaimani city, blocked the Dukan-Sulaimani highway and set fire to the local headquarters of the PUK.
