SULAIMANI — Municipal officials in Baghdad announced on Saturday (January 25) that they are working to reopen al-Ahrar Bridge to traffic, removing large concrete barriers and washing the road surface.

Baghdad Operations Command said that it was working to reopen all roads that have been blocked to traffic.

The bridge, which spans the Tigris River in central Baghdad, was the scene of heavy clashes between protesters and the security forces in November, along with nearby Sinak and Al Jumariyah bridges.

Around 500 people have been killed and more than 17,000 wounded in anti-government unrest in central and southern Iraq since October 1. Protesters have been seeking fundamental change to governance in the country, which they see as fundamentally corrupt and dysfunctional.
