SULAIMANI — Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi is expected to step down by Wednesday, a source with knowledge of the matter told NRT Digital Media late on Tuesday night (October 29).

“The matter was discussed in a meeting with the Iraqi president and the heads of the caucuses and the judiciary council,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Barham Salih chaired the meeting at Salam Palace. Constitutionally, the president is responsible to appointing the prime minister.

Several scenarios were discussed, including the dissolution of the current government and the declaration of caretaker government.

The group also discussed the general situation with regard to the ongoing wave of protests and how to respond to protesters’ demands.
