SULAIMANI — Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity said on Tuesday (December 7) the ministry needs $20 billion to permanently eliminate the issues plaguing the chronically poor electricity services in the country.

Ministry spokesperson Ahmad al-Abadi said in a press conference the ministry has a five-year plan aimed to deliver 54,000 megawatts.

"If we are financially supported we will reach 28,000 megawatts by next summer," he said.

The power sector has been affected by conflict and poor maintenance. Iraq produces only 16,000 megawatts of power, below the 24,000 megawatts needed, while gas and electricity are purchased from Iran to supply a third of the power sector.
