SULAIMANI — Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi met on Monday (August 3) with Hamid Saeed, a teenager who was attacked and humiliated by members of the security force in Baghdad earlier this year.

Video of the incident, which took place in April, has been shared extensively on social media to widespread outcry. It showed the sixteen-year-old being physical and verbally abused, threatened, stripped naked, and his head shaved with a razor.

During the meeting, Kadhimi characterized the treatment of Saeed as an “immoral and unlawful attack.”

The prime minister apologized to the teenager and promised him that the perpetrators would be prosecuted and that he would receive legal assistance.

The federal Ministry of Interior has announced that it arrested three members of its Law Preservation Forces, who it said were responsible for the attack. Kadhimi has also ordered the head of the unit confined to his headquarters and the purpose of the unit reexamined.

The attack occurred in the context of both the crackdown on anti-government protests that began last October, in which Saeed reportedly participated, as well as Kadhimi’s stated desire to protect the demonstrators and ensure accountability on the part of the security forces.
