SULAIMANI — A local official in Choman has said that Iranian warplanes bombed the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (KDPI) in Smilan sub-district at approximately10 a.m. on Monday (August 3).

Choman Mayor Swara Akram told NRT Digital Media that the attack caused damage to a number of nearby homes.

“According to the available information, there were no casualties from the bombardment,” he added.

Turkey and Iran routinely engage in cross-border attacks on targets inside the Kurdistan Region with the justification that such actions are necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

Dozens of civilians have been killed or wounded in recent years in the attacks, which have also displaced thousands of people from their villages.

Tensions are particularly high at the moment because of sustained air and ground operations by the Turkish military, which has killed at least six civilians since June 15.
