SULAIMANI — Employees at the Sulaimani Traffic Directorate protested on Thursday (July 2) against the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) decision to cut their salaries by 21 percent.

The employees have been on strike for more than two weeks.

“I cannot work with empty pockets and the day the salaries were paid I, and dozens of others, were indebted over the salary,” a traffic police officer told an NRT reporter.

“We will continue to [protest] until the salary cut is resolved,” another traffic police officer said.

“We have been told that anyone who does not return to their duties will face legal actions,” another police officer said.

In response to a major budget shortfall, the KRG has held off on distributing salaries this spring and then announced on June 21 that is was cutting the salaries of public sector workers who earn more than 300,000 Iraqi dinars by 21 percent for this pay period.
