SULAIMANI — Following the raising of an Iraqi flag near the border between Turkey and the Kurdistan Region, the manager of Batifa sub-district said on Wednesday (July 1) that a unit from the Iraqi Border Guards had been deployed on Dere and Shahbanie mountains in an effort to discourage fighting between Turkey and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“The force has already been tasked with protecting the border of Zakho,” Batifa Manager Dlsher Abdulstar told NRT Digital Media, explaining that the unit was already in the area.

“The deployment of that force in that area is to protect the people and to prevent further deterioration of the situation due to fighting between the PKK and the Turkish army,” he said.

Meanwhile, an NRT reporter said that a force from the Peshmerga’s Duhok command has been relocated to the Darkari district and stationed around Sharanshi village.

Earlier this week, an Iraqi military delegation led by the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Border Security Forces visited Zakho district for meetings with several relevant commanders and political parties to discuss the new Turkish military operations in the Kurdistan Region.
