SULAIMANI — Leader of the National Wisdom Movement Ammar al-Hakim on Tuesday (June 30) announced a new grouping within the Council of Representatives named the Iraqion Alliance, which was created to support Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi’s government.

The new alliance reportedly consists of nearly 50 lawmakers from different caucuses.

“Our goal is to help the government to execute and enforce the law on everyone and to regain the trust of the people,” said Hakim in a statement, who is also a Shia cleric.

Hakim added that their second goal pf the new group to restore balance in the Council of Representatives and fulfill the demands of the protesters.

Kadhimi came to power through consensus between Iraq’s parties and without an independent power base. Analysts had identified this as a weakness and have argued that a similar arrangement had hamstrung his predecessor Adil Abdul Mahdi.
